Preferred Genres for Editing

Like all editors, I have my preferences for the stories I like to work with.

Do you write action? Bring it on. Are your scenes filled with the gruesome? I’m loving it even more. Do you weave in the fantasy, science, or technology into that action-filled story? Okay, I’m sold.

But be warned: if you send me science fiction, be prepared to have your scientific principles challenged; I have a PhD in Astrophysics, though I wouldn't call me a rocket scientist.

Genres I like working with (in no particular order)

  • Suspense / Thriller (including romantic suspense)
  • Fantasy (all sub-genres, including paranormal romance and fantasy romance)
  • Science Fiction (all sub-genres, near-future is my favorite, but a good space opera has me salivating)
  • Horror (bring on the heart-stopping fear)
  • Mystery / Crime (including violent crime, if the story demands it)
  • Comedy
  • Middle grade (chapter books)

I am also willing to work with contemporary stories that dive into controversial social topics. But depending on the topic, I might recommend that you seek out a sensitivity reader.

No topic is out of bounds

There is no topic that I’m not willing to consider within stories. As long as the story treats those topics with respect, I’ll happily go there with you.

Extreme Violence ✅

Extreme violence is an inherent property of the genres I like working with. So, bring it on! I’ll happily go there with you IF the story warrants the level of violence depicted. This includes violence against women, children, and animals.

Be advised that if I feel the level of violence used is not necessary for plot or character development, I will challenge your scenes.

Open-Door Sex Scenes ✅

Yep, I’ll work with these too. That said, I’ll be looking for the emotional engagement.

My only request is that I be warned that these scenes exist—so I can avoid being in a coffee shop or some other public setting when I’m reading those scenes.

Politically Controversial Topics ✅

I’m okay with politically controversial topics, as long as those topics do not relate to any particular country’s government structure.

If you require an editor with a solid working knowledge of government and politics for any given country, I’m not your girl. (I barely understand the government system of my home country of New Zealand. I have no hope of getting my head around the systems in other countries.)

LGBTQ+, Ethnic Diversity, and Disabilities ✅

The world is made up of so many people from different walks of life, different experiences, and different identities. If this is just a function of your world, then bring it on!

However, I will challenge any token characters added.

And I encourage all writers who dive into these characters to seek sensitivity readers. (Depending on your manuscript’s needs, I might be able to help you find those sensitivity readers.)

Historical Accuracy?

For historical (and futuristic) settings, I work on the principle of plausibility.

I will not be checking your facts. Fact checking is the responsibility of the author.

That said, if you would like your story to deliberately deviate from historical records, I know exactly how to make your story plausible enough, so the reader is willing to accept your story’s world as you have written it.

I won’t edit the following

If you are writing in any of the following genres, I’m not the best person to help you.

  • Memoir ❌
  • Literary Fiction ❌
  • Christian Fiction ❌
  • Traditional Category Romance ❌
  • Poetry ❌
  • Picture Books ❌
  • Technical How-To Books / Textbooks ❌

My Stance on AI-Generated Stories

Due to the copyright issues involved, I have elected to not work on AI-generated stories, but I will work with AI-assisted stories.

I define AI-generated stories as those stories that were created by an AI program from a prompt but without human intervention.

If you are using AI tools to spark your imagination but your stories are still your own words, then you likely have either an AI-assisted story or a human-generated story. For more information about how I define the line between AI-generated and AI-assisted, visit this blog post.

If you are unsure if you have an AI-assisted or AI-generated story, please reach out to me and let's have a chat. I can help you get it straight in your mind, so you know what checkboxes you need to check moving forward.
